Station 2 of the hike “Taking a breath in the universe” – komoot.de/tour/1248788083

Rocky planets like Earth are formed by the agglomeration of interstellar dust in a disc-shaped collection of dust and gas that exists finely distributed throughout the stars. As they form, they become hot and differentiate into layers with a dense metallic core, a mantle of liquid silicate rock, and a thin solid rock crust. This differentiation process leads to the formation of volcanoes and other geological features. The atmosphere of the planet thus formed consists partly of original interstellar gas, but mostly of the gas spewed out by the volcanoes: mainly carbon dioxide, but also many other gases that are poisonous to us.

A planet with significant geological activity is Venus. It is similar in size and composition to Earth, but its atmosphere is almost entirely carbon dioxide. The release of carbon dioxide from the volcanoes led to an uncontrolled greenhouse effect, which resulted in the current state of the planet.

Although the Earth has been cooling for more than 4 billion years, volcanism continues. The Vulkaneifel is the most recent example of this that we have in Germany. The maars that we see on the hike are evidence of this.
