Those entering the city from the west will first stop at the massive tower of St. Mary's Church and marvel at this ensemble – the old tower and (separately) the "New Church."The church tower belongs to an older St. Mary's Church, built around 1200. Its chancel faced east, toward the city. The tower likely served as a defense and escape tower at the time, as a continuous protective city wall was not built until the 13th century. The first documented mention of a pastor of the "New Church" dates back to 1253.

The bell tower is separate from the church itself. It is not open to the public (upstairs), but there is a small chapel below.
