Medieval church with bell tower rising out of a lake, remains of a sunken village.

A detour to the sunken church ⛪️ is definitely recommended, just because of the photo.

While other sights and photo spots are purposefully built elsewhere in the Alps, the church tower in the lake is a naturally formed sight. Or how should one describe this sad circumstance? The former village of Graun was actually on the spot around the church tower. The church tower, church and cemetery were an integral part of the site. Before today's Lake Reschen was created by flooding in 1950, all residents had to leave the village. The houses were blown up, including the church. Only the church tower remained. There was a simple reason for this: it is a listed building. It was inaugurated in 1357. Therefore it was neither demolished nor blown up. Since then it has been a memorial, monument and the most visited attraction on Lake Reschen.

Very popular photo motif in Lake Reschen and always surrounded by crowds.
