The Rothenbuch forest climate station (WKS) is located about 8 km west of Lohr am Main at the »Bischborner Hof«, near the federal highway 26 between Lohr and Aschaffenburg.

The Bavarian forest climate stations
Forests are of particular importance for the performance of the natural balance. They are subject to constant change, which is controlled by environmental factors. At the locations of the forest climate stations (WKS), environmental influences and their effect on the forest in the most important forest landscapes in Bavaria are recorded.

The Bavarian State Institute for Forests and Forestry (LWF) has been operating the forest climate stations since 1991, whose research stocks are also open to other institutes.

Structure of a forest climate station

Stock measurement point
It is located in a forest stand that is as uniform as possible (tree species, age, structure, location). The pollutants are recorded according to quantity and quality. Changes in the forest soil (e.g. soil acidification) are measured and their effect on the forest trees observed.

Outdoor measuring station
In a clearing surrounded by forest, important meteorological parameters are recorded (e.g. wind speed), which also affect the forest canopy. Pollutants are measured that are carried into the forest with precipitation or as dust. The spatial proximity as well as a comparable altitude and terrain formation ensure that the measurements in the open area and in the stand are consistent.
Up to 750,000 measurement data per year allow the analysis of cause and effect of environmental influences in the forest (storms, drought, pollutants). They are used, for example, to determine the time of the bark beetle swarm flight. The responsible district manager is usually responsible for looking after the forest climate station on site.
