Kurhaus Bergün / Allegra and Bainvegni
The Kurhaus Bergün was planned in connection with the new Albula railway line that went into operation in 1903. The well-known Zurich architect Jost Franz Huwyler-Boller was commissioned with the construction and the grand hotel began operations in 1906. An attempt was made to make Bergün attractive for tourism as an acclimatization and climatic health resort. Despite the luxurious and, for the time, most modern equipment, the economic upswing failed to materialize and so the Kurhaus struggled to survive from the very beginning.
In 1949 the house had to be closed after a fire in the attic, and its continued existence was uncertain. From 1952 the Swiss Association for Family Hostels successfully ran the Kurhaus. The hotel rooms were combined into simple holiday apartments and rented out on a weekly basis. In the next 50 years, however, no major maintenance work was carried out on the house.
This should prove to be a stroke of luck during the later restoration: little of the original substance of the Kurhaus was destroyed. In 2002 the dilapidated house was closed for the time being. Long-standing regular guests founded the new Kurhaus Bergün AG and thus saved it from going under. Since then, the building has been restored in small steps in an exemplary manner and with great skill, dusted off and made fit for the new century as a valuable Art Nouveau pearl.
The work paid off: With the award as “Historical Hotel of the Year 2012”, the Kurhaus has experienced a gratifying upswing and boost in popularity and can look forward to its future with optimism.
