In Kiev / Ukraine, the site of a former camp for German prisoners of war was turned into a park in the 1950s. The grounds of the arboretum also served the war for decades. As an airfield in World War II, then as an American military camp and camp for German prisoners of war. One of the survivors of the Kiev prison in 1999 picked up a chestnut tree in the Ukrainian park. From this grew this tree, which here in the arboretum, where trees from all over the world stand peacefully next to each other, bears witness that enmity between peoples can be overcome. May 7, 2005
