Długi Targ is an extension of Długa Street in Gdańsk's Old Town.

Długa and Długi Targ have always been part of the city inhabited by the wealthiest. Tenement houses belonged to the most respectable patricians, merchants and people holding high offices. Due to the ceremonial parades carried out along this road in the years 1457-1552, it was named the Royal Road. It was here that spacious quarters were rented to Polish kings, and grand fireworks were set on the occasion of royal family holidays. In the 14th and 15th centuries, meat was sold every Saturday at Długi Targ, and live piglets were sold on the section between the Neptune Fountain and the town hall, which is why this part of the Royal Road was called the Piglet Market.

The characteristic spatial layout of Długi Targ, differing from the layout of the main town square typical in the Middle Ages, is known in the cities of the southern Baltic coast, founded under the Lübeck law. It is located on the west-east axis, towards the Motława riverbank, similar to most streets in Gdańsk. The longer frontages were built with two-bay and then three-bay tenement houses with large halls. Medieval residential buildings with decorative facades forming the northern and southern frontages of the square were completely replaced in the 16th-18th century by modern ones. From the west, the square is closed by the Main Town Hall and the Schumann House, and from the east by the Green Gate.
