The hermitage of San Colombano, in the municipality of Trambileno a few kilometers from Rovereto on the state road to Vicenza, can be reached by walking along a short path and a staircase of 102 steps, dug directly into the rock.

The hermitage is built halfway up on a overhang of about 120 meters. Protected from bad weather by a natural rock roof, it is dedicated to the Saint who, according to legend, as a young knight killed the dragon that caused the death of baptized children in the waters of the Leno stream below. The hermitage seems to have been inhabited since 753. The construction date of the church and the adjoining hermitage dates back to the 10th century.

The Hermitage of San Colombano is a small and amazing architectural jewel that can be seen from the state road and leaves you speechless!

Boldly built halfway up a 120-metre rock face, overhanging the Vallarsa, it is perfectly set in a recess and protected by a natural rock roof. In order to complete the tip of the bell tower, it was necessary to dig into the rock to make room for it. Part of the inner walls and roof are the rock itself.

It was the home of several hermits from at least 753 (date engraved near the bell tower) until 1782 (year in which the practice of hermitage was abolished, i.e. the complete isolation of the monk in meditation in almost inaccessible natural places). The very first settlement was the 'Grotta dell'Eremita', present inside; the adjacent church was added later, around the year one thousand.

It is dedicated to the Irish saint of the same name who, according to legend, arrived in these areas and killed the dragon that poisoned the waters of the Leno stream below, causing the death of the children who were baptized there.

There are a few parking spaces at the bottom of the valley: from there it can be reached by walking along a short path and a thousand-year-old stairway of 102 steps, dug entirely into the rock probably by the hermits themselves and worn out by the weather and by the steps of pilgrims over the centuries.

Open from July to September, from Thursday to Sunday, from 10 to 18. In other seasons it can be admired from the outside, which is the real show anyway. Recommended to see it in the morning when the light from the east, across the valley, illuminates it. I recommend the free offer, given that the Hermitage is managed by an association of volunteers.
