The historic lock Klein Königsförde is the fourth lock of the old Eider Canal. It was built between 1777 and 1784 when the Eider Canal was being built. Due to the height differences in the terrain through which the Eider Canal runs, locks were necessary. These are so-called box locks, which were built on piles driven into the ground. The free lock, which was spanned by a barrel-like wall, controlled the water level and the ship's lock spanned the Dutch wooden bascule bridge. If a ship wanted to cross the canal, the gates made of heavy planks were opened and when the ships left the water, the water closed the lock again.
The Klein Königsförde lock had the task of lowering the water level to 4.80 meters after the steep slope from Holtenau. When ever larger ships were built in the 19th century, the Eider Canal and thus the locks could no longer fulfill their function, which is why the Kiel Canal was built.
Today the Klein Königsförde lock is still in good condition and is a protected cultural monument.
