The Lahresfelsen is located under the castle ruins of Altenstein in the Zeilberge (Hassberge Nature Park) in Lower Franconia. The Rhaetian sandstone block (approx. 205 million years old) probably slid down the slope to its current location on the clay and clay marl layers of the Feuerletten. The overlying sandstone poses serious problems for the preservation of monuments, because the downward movement is not yet complete. The Altenstein ruins last had to be extensively renovated at the beginning of the 21st century.

The house-sized sandstone block is on the left on the edge of Altenstein, near Pfaffendorfer Gasse, about 150 m from the south wall of the ruin. A few steps indicate that the rock was used as a lookout or watch point as early as the Middle Ages. The steps begin about 2 meters above today's ground. A retractable ladder probably provided the contact to the ground, which could be quickly retracted in an emergency. There is also a bench for walkers at the foot of the rock.

The Lahresfelsen is popularly known as the Lorenzenfelsen. There's a bench in front of it, offering a beautiful view.
