Church of Santa Maria Elisabetta, Cavallino

The first news about the Church of Cavallino

In 1591 the bishop of Torcello, Antonio Grimani, wrote in the account of the pastoral visit that in the Cavallino there was a "well preserved" chapel, which was probably not far from the building now known as the ancient church of Santa Maria Elisabetta .

In 1698 Bishop Marco Giustiniani visited the church dedicated to Saint Mary Elizabeth and attended by a small number of residents.

Giovanni Matteo Alberti - a physician of German origin who lived in Venice and was the owner of the island since 1686 - wrote to the bishop of Torcello in 1696 that Cavallino was "an unhappy desert and because of the unhealthiness of the air and because of the sterility of the marshy and useless soil " may be. But it will be the Alberti to reclaim land, introduce numerous settlers and persuade the bishop to found an autonomous parish at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The construction of the church and subsequent restorations

For most of the eighteenth century the island remained in the hands of the Druyvesteyn family, represented in Venice by the Dutch consul Giacomo Fèitama. The consul stayed in Cavallino for a long time and contributed to the construction of the new church between 1744 and 1751, while the bell tower was completed a few years later.

In 1916 the building was remodeled, leaning on the old facade and receiving a new one with neoclassical concrete moldings. In addition, the presbytery was extended to the east to make room for the choir. However, in 1985-88 the original shell was restored by reconstructing the old back wall of the presbytery with the main altar leaning against it during a complete restoration of the church. The financial support of Angelo Macola (1909-1995), one of the great pioneers of outdoor tourism in Cavallino, now buried at the foot of the presbytery, was fundamental.

        The bell tower

It was rebuilt from scratch in 1906, relocating three bells cast in 1890. The bell tower and spire suffered progressive decay until 1980, when the tower was demolished because it was unsafe, and in 1986, at the end of a full restoration of the bell tower, the bells rang after twenty-five years of silence.
