    The Birdman

The bird man is a stainless steel sculpture installed in the Bastinsweiher. This work was designed and executed by the Stolberg-born and nationally known goldsmith and metal sculptor Albert Sous, who spent his childhood in Mausbach and worked as a freelance artist in Stolberg's Steinwegstraße from 1969 to 1973 before moving to his studio Würselen moved.
The Vogelmensch refers to the Vogelsängerlied by the main teacher Ernst Grüber, which can be regarded as Stolberg's "national anthem", so to speak. The Vogelsänger in turn refers to the inhabitants of the Vogelsang, which was probably the most characteristic and well-known street in Stolberg's old town at the time.

The figure depicted in the sculpture, striving towards heaven, also refers to the nearby Catholic parish church of St. Maria Ascension and also makes associations with the trumpet angel on the tower.
