Hamburg's last hiking dunes are located in the Boberger Niederung nature reserve. The Boberger dunes are a remnant of the ice age, which among other things houses rare animal species and is a popular destination for families and nature lovers from Hamburg. The Boberger Niederung in the southeast of Hamburg has been a nature reserve since 1991, but at around 7,000 years the area itself is much older. The total size is about five kilometers in length and one and a half kilometers in width. On the approximately 350 hectare area, the Geest slope, moor area, large dunes, heathland, marshland form an unmistakable landscape and one of the most biodiverse green spaces in the Hanseatic city. In addition to a bathing lake, which is often used on warm afternoons, the area also includes a glider airfield and a toboggan run. In 1968 the Boberger Düne and the Achtermoor were declared natural monuments.
