The Catholic Sacred Heart Church in Garz was built on the initiative of the Bergen pastor Maximilian Kaller and consecrated in June 1913. Like the St. Boniface Church in Bergen, which also belongs to the Catholic parish on Rügen, it was designed from the outset for possible expansion and was intended to be accessible above all for the Polish reapers on Rügen and, after the Second World War, for the refugees from Silesia and the Sudetenland.
The church is a neo-Gothic brick building with a small tower. In 1964 it received a bell from the Berlin-Grunewald parish that was no longer needed. A new sandstone altar was built in 1960 and in 1971 the church received a life-sized Romanesque crucifix.
