Local recreation area and nature adventure trail in Lohner Sand

The landscape that has developed between the district road Schepsdorf - Nordlohne in the north and the Rupingorter Kirchweg in the south in recent years after the departure of the German Armed Forces offers every opportunity to spend time in the open air. Hikers, cyclists and joggers will find ideal conditions here to switch off and simply enjoy the beauty of nature. The area is ideal for family outings.

Not only for the little ones there is a lot to discover and learn on the 2.6 km long nature adventure trail. 16 themed stations reveal everything about the flora and fauna in the Lohner Sand, whose development is far from over. The change from pure coniferous forest to mixed forest is a progressive ecological process of renaturation. The 43 hectares of open spaces are also being developed in a controlled manner. The Grafschaft Bentheim Nature Conservation Foundation is responsible for the maintenance and further development of these high-quality open spaces. Swallowtails, yellow snails, natterjack toads, red-brown ox-eyes and scurvy bears have settled where, until 2004, the Leopard tanks of the Bundeswehr carved deep tracks into the sandy ground.

Information boards, vantage points, open and covered picnic areas as well as marked cycling and hiking trails and, since last year, the beekeeping trail of the beekeeping association, transform the walk into an exciting adventure excursion that requires repetition, because there is always something new to discover on the huge site. And one thing is guaranteed when you visit the Lohner Sands - pure relaxation and recreation right on your doorstep.
