Road cycling
It suffered damage from earthquakes (1504 and 1755) and various uses (a hospital during the plague of 1649, a bullring in 1871). In 1976, it was inaugurated as a Parador Nacional (a state-run luxury hotel), after a restoration that recovered its medieval splendor.
It was the setting for the love story between Pedro I and María de Padilla, which adds a romantic touch to its past.
