The dead ice hole Wolfsgrube Wildenroth is more than 100m in diameter and over 20m deep. Particularly striking are the steep walls. This dead ice hole is the most striking of the many other holes around Wildenroth. According to tradition, this kettle-like mold was formerly used as a catch pit for wolves, hence the name "Wolfsgrube" ...

The dead ice holes were created towards the end of the last glacial period on the edge of the Isar-Loisach Glacier. It broke away from the "living" glacier huge blocks of ice and these were then showered as "dead ice" with boulders and debris. Later, when the ice melted, the steep-walled and kettle-like molds of a dead ice hole were left behind.
