The stacked residential complex "The Interlace" by the German star architect Ole Scheeren in Singapore has been recognized as the world's best high-rise project for urban living space. It was already completed in 2023. Nature and civilization meet in a vertical village.
The hexagonal arrangement also ensures that residents can use both private and public spaces. It offers space for individuality while at the same time conveying a strong sense of community.
This groundbreaking architectural vision could become a paradigm for many more urban structures that seek to strike a balance between space requirements and privacy in increasingly densely populated cities, where both qualities are increasingly becoming a luxury good.
The complex consists of blocks of flats, each with six floors, arranged in a hexagon and encompassing eight inner courtyards. The apartment blocks are stacked up to three times (four levels) on top of each other, so that the building complex has 24 floors.
The 170,000 square foot Interlace complex sits on 20 acres on the corner of Depot Road and Alexandra Road. The property has been leased by the Singapore government since 2009 for 99 years. It has 31 residential blocks with a total of 1040 residential units ranging in size from 74 m² to 585 m². (Note: with an average of 4 people per residential unit = 4,000 – 4,500 residents)
The complex is equipped with swimming pools, a gym, tennis courts, a basketball court, children's playgrounds, karaoke rooms, pool tables and 1183 parking spaces
Architecture is both an expression of reality and a future vision of possible living environments.

Architect Ole Scheeren was born in Karlsruhe in 1971 and asks himself how today's architecture can be used to create prototypes for tomorrow's life. Scheeren is one of the best-known German architects and has made a name for itself with innovative high-rise buildings and residential projects. In 2014, his residential development “The Interlace” in Singapore received the Urban Habitat Award from the Council for High-rise Buildings and Urban Living in Chicago as the world’s best high-rise project for urban living space, and in 2015 it was named “World Building of the Year” by the international World Architecture Festival.
Since 2010 he has been running his own office with offices in Hong Kong, Beijing, Berlin and London. For him, architecture is an organism intertwined with life. Scheeren breaks through what were once separate functional areas such as living and working, commerce and culture by designing spaces that focus on people's needs.
