St. Peter and Paul in Wiefelsdorf

In a document from Pope Lucius III. on April 30, 1183, the cathedral chapter in Regensburg confirmed ownership of the church. The church in Wiefelsdorf is said to have existed as a primary parish around 800. The main parts of the church building can be traced back to the Romanesque period. In the years 1444/45 a thorough restoration took place. In 1748 the church was expanded and e.g. equipped with a baroque pulpit. Since the interior renovation of 1996, the church has once again displayed its full baroque splendor. Today, the pretty church is often used as a wedding church.
In the center of the high altar is a venerable figure of the Mother of God. This sculpture from around 1500 was taken to Schwandorf as a precaution during the Swedish War, but was thrown into the fire by plundering soldiers, but miraculously survived the embers. God the Father and the Holy Spirit appear above her head, to her sides are the figures of St. Nepomuk and St. Joseph, universally popular saints of the time. The main patron saints of the church, St. Peter and St. Paul, are placed on the outside of the altar in the large canopy windows.
The left side altarpiece shows us the death of Saint Francis Xavier, he falls asleep gently in a hut on the beach, the wide sea with ships on the horizon is a reference to his overseas mission.
The right side altar depicts the peaceful death of St. Joseph in the presence of Christ and Mary, surrounded by a colorful crowd of angels.
