The bridge is located at the crossing of a Roman road that, from Gerunda, penetrated the mountainous interior following the left bank of the Ter. The restoration works could confirm the Roman origin of the enormous ashlars that support the base of the arcades. There is no evidence that the bridge was rebuilt in the Middle Ages, despite being at the foot of an important communication route in the county of Girona. The current bridge is considered one of the best remaining examples of the Civil Late Gothic style in the demarcation. It is surely a work of the 17th century that was promoted by the Olmera, lords of Anglès, and the monastery of Amer.

The bridge served only a few years, as a flood rendered it useless by shifting the course of the river, before the Santa Llúcia flood of 1777 took away the arch on the right bank. And it is that on December 13, a downpour of great proportions caused the Ter to overflow and in Sant Julià it caused the original change of waters, leaving the Carrer Vell bridge without a river. This excess of water is remembered by the aguato de Santa Llúcia. However, it is possible that the bridge was no longer useful, because it is known from a document from 1727 that the Cuc d'Anglès farm owned a boat that crossed the Ter as public transport.
