Hiking Highlight
The symbol of the Simplon Pass is the golden eagle. The stone bird of prey was erected during the Second World War. The pass was very important at the time: the connection from the border with Italy to the top of the pass was greatly expanded.

The eagle is the symbol of the Simplon.
It was built during the active period in World War II. As a symbol of vigilance, it was created by the 11 Mountain Brigade in memory of the “Watch on the Simplon”.
The following inscription is on the base:
"IN THE FREEDOM OF THE MOUNTAINS THERE IS AN IMPORTANT TIME MADE OF HARD GRANITE: A REMEMBERED FAITHFUL DUTY FULFILLMENT, A PERMANENT ADMINISTRATION TO BE WILLING AND AWAKE FOR OUR FREEDOM."
In 2019, the Simplon Eagle will celebrate its 75th anniversary as the Simplon's landmark. In order to be able to show itself from its best and most beautiful side, the Alder was extensively renovated in autumn 2018.
