The highest point in the Sarthe department, the Perseigne massif is an islet detached from the Armorican massif, of which it represents the easternmost point.

This forest was the responsibility of the vicarage of Saosnois before becoming the stronghold of the counts of Perche in the 10th century. In 1130, Guillaume III Talvas founded the abbey of Perseigne. In 1364, the abbey of Perseigne caught fire. She visits again.

The Perseigne forest is the last forest in Sarthe to have sheltered wolf populations at the end of the 19th century. The last wolf killed in Perseigne was in 1890. Another specimen killed in 1880 is now on public display at the Green Museum, the natural history museum of the city of Le Mans.
