The castle in Babstadt, a district of Bad Rappenau in the district of Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg, was built around 1900 in place of a previous building and is therefore one of the youngest castles in the district.
The previous structure was built in 1712 by Adolf von Kimming, who owned the site at the time. In 1732 the Lords of Gemmingen acquired the town and castle. Today's castle was built by Ernst von Gemmingen-Hornberg (1851-1928) from 1898 to 1911 according to plans by the Stuttgart architect Carl Weigle, while retaining the baroque portal of the previous building.
After the First World War, the castle was inhabited by Ernst von Gemmingen-Hornberg and his family. Son Eberhard (1883-1952) lived there with his wife Hertha von Degenfeld (1894-1963) until the end of the Second World War. When the Americans occupied the castle in 1945, the couple moved to nearby Neuhaus Castle, which Hertha von Degenfeld had inherited in the 1920s.
A gallery was housed in the castle in the 1980s and 1990s before the building was extensively renovated and has since served as the residence of the builders' heirs again.
The castle, built on a rectangular floor plan with a sweeping staircase, corner tower and volute gables, was built in the late historicist style and incorporates stylistic elements from the Renaissance, Baroque and late Gothic periods. To the west is a farmyard, to the south is a large landscaped park surrounded by a wall reinforced with battlements and loopholes.
