A few kilometers from the center of Palau, the Fortezza towers on Monte Altura. Built into the rock at the end of the 18th century, the fortress protected the surrounding towns and the Archpel La Maddalena from the French fleet. It also served to defend this stretch of coast in World War I and World War II. All cannons and artillery were gradually removed, but the foundations give an idea of how powerful the armament once was. While the fortress can hardly be seen from the sea side because it is built into the rock, it is an impressive sight from the land side! With more than 100 steps, the ramp to the top of the fortress resembles a temple of the Maya or Inca. Most of the rooms can be walked through and almost all around you can enjoy breathtaking views of the interior, to La Maddalena and to Corsica on the wall of the fortress. Depending on the time of year and season, a guided tour of the fortress is offered several times a day. There are explanations in Italian and English.
