The Fortuna mine extracted 4.8 million tons of iron ore in the form of red iron ore, so-called hematite, brown iron ore, so-called limonite and some magnetite from 1943 to March 3, 1983 from a depth of up to 250 meters.Since 1958, underground workers and today visitors in the hoisting cage have been guided down the ropes to the 150-metre level in the hoisting machine house.
The rope ride is made possible with a drum conveyor machine, which is driven by an electric motor.
The conveyor ropes have a diameter of 27 mm and run through openings in the wall of the house to the opposite pulley house. The sheave house stands above the shaft and carries the hoisting cage that hangs from one end of the rope. At the other end hangs a three-ton counterweight.

When the Fortuna pit is open, you can go into the machine house and have the employee explain the function of the elevator to you. Brilliant old technique........
