The James Bateman Geological Gallery (1862) at Biddulph Grange contains a selection of fossils and geological strata. These are set into the length of the gallery wall, in chronological sequence as understood by nineteenth-century geologists.

This is the only Geological Gallery of its kind in the world. It came into National Trust ownership in 2002. The restoration of the Gallery has been funded entirely by donations from volunteers and visitors and has involved, as with many of the garden’s restoration projects, curators, conservators, building surveyors and, for this project, a palaeontologist, leading academics from Keele university and stone masons as well as support from geological associations and groups. Restoration of this room will complete in 2020.

The gallery is unique in the way that it tries to unite creationism and the findings of stratigraphy, a very new science in those days - a struggle many scientists in that era were fighting.
