During the First World War, the border between occupied Belgium and the neutral Netherlands was sealed shut.
The German occupiers built an unprecedented barrier of high voltage cables: the death wire no less than 450 km long. You died a horrible death at the slightest touch.

      From Wikipedia,
The Wire, also called Death Wire or Death Fence, was a 332-kilometre-long wire barrier constructed by the German occupiers of Belgium during World War I along the border between occupied Belgium and neutral Netherlands. In German documents, the barrier was officially referred to as a Grenzhochspannungshindernis. The barrier was charged with lethal electric current and was intended to prevent war volunteers and German deserters from fleeing Belgium. The fence was also intended to prevent espionage messages from occupied territory from reaching Allied intelligence services via the Netherlands and to prevent smuggling. The Wire is estimated to have cost the lives of hundreds of people, but could not prevent thousands of people from crossing the border in various ways. After the war, the Death Fence was quickly dismantled.
