The splendid sanctuary on the outskirts of San Marzano is of Byzantine origins, although it does not respond perfectly to the patterns of the peoples of the East due to the conformations of the rock. The church overlooks a blade of the territory, in a splendid scenery of ravines; the blade about five meters deep at the highest point, suggestive and particular, is characterized by the presence of many caves of various sizes that open on the ridges. The underground church seems to have been characterized by different periods of construction: the first up to the fifteenth century with the dedication to San Giorgio, the second from the sixteenth to the present day dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie
