Hiking Highlight
Stargard Castle is one of the few high-altitude castles in the north German lowlands. The castle, located on the approximately 90 meter high castle hill, consists of a vestibule and main castle with eleven buildings that have been preserved and, with the keep as a landmark, shapes the appearance of the city. Stargard Castle is one of the most important secular buildings in the country.

The town of Stargard was first mentioned in a document in 1170 and in the Slavic language describes an "old castle", today's landmark of the city.
The 1236 - 1270 by the Brandenburg Margraves Johann I. and Otto III. The castle complex erected is the oldest secular building in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the northernmost preserved hilltop castle in Germany.
Stargard received city rights in 1259 and is considered an arable town. Dukes and military leaders resided on the mighty brick castle – 50 m above the town.
In 1852 a two-storey prison was built in the outer bailey, which was converted into a hotel in the spring of 2000. The reconstructed stables, which previously served as a stallion station, warehouse and granary, now house the town's museum.
