"The history of this church is closely linked to the events of the castle of Monteriggioni. It was built between 1213, the year of the foundation of Monteriggioni[1], and June 10, 1235 when, inside it, the delegates of the municipalities of Siena and Poggibonsi accepted the conditions of peace with the Florentines[2]. The new parish that was born after its foundation depended on the parish of Marmoraia and brought together the people of the Stomennano canonica and the church of San Giovanni a Stecchi[3].

The development of Monteriggioni increased the importance of the church, so much so that at the end of the 13th century it was promoted to parish, the title of Canonica Sanctae Marie Stemennano was transferred there and the baptismal font was placed there[3]. It had incomes completely comparable to those of the nearby Sienese parishes[4][5]. Until the early 14th century it was used for both religious and civil functions. In 1299 a new bell was placed there which is still present today; this bell probably came from the castle fortress[6]; on 12 June 1313 it appears that the abbot of Isola, lord of the surrounding lands, habitually sat there[3].

In 1360 the statutes of the Republic of Siena established the boundaries of the parish of Monteriggioni: it was made up of 10 suffragan churches[7].

In the first half of the 19th century the building was partially transformed[8]. "

the church is very old, the facade was built in 1235. The interior is soothingly simple.
