The Khünburg was first mentioned in documents in 1189 as the property of the ministerial Count Pero de Kinburch from the Austrian noble family von Kuenburg.

From the 13th century the castle was owned by the bishopric of Bamberg. In 1311 the complex was pledged to Duke Henry of Carinthia. After the fire of 1540 or 1541, the castle fell into disrepair. The Khünburg family moved their headquarters to the Khünegg Castle in Egg (Hermagor).

In 1913 the first restoration took place. In 1931 the keep was given a roof and a wooden staircase was installed to make it accessible. In 2012 there was a complete new roofing combined with repair work on the tower roof beams.[1]
