The Cornberg Monastery is a listed former Benedictine monastery in Cornberg, which was built in the years 1292-1296. Napoleon's sister is said to have stayed here on a trip.

Adjacent is a sandstone museum where numerous fossils from the copper slate of the Richelsdorf Mountains and the Cornberger Zechstein give an impression of the biodiversity of marine animals and plants from the original region.

There is also a beautiful small natural lake right next to the monastery.

Until the start of construction of the miners' settlement in 1938, Cornberg consisted only of the former monastery with its extensive residential and farm buildings, a restaurant and post office. The estate district had about 50 inhabitants. At that time, the monastery was a state domain and managed by tenants. A significant part of the aging monastery complex fell victim to the construction of the B27 at the end of the 1950s. Only the monastery square was preserved, three quarters of the former buildings have been demolished. After the domain was closed in 1964, the four-winged building also fell into disrepair. In 1989, the state of Hesse decided to carry out extensive renovations, which were completed in 1994. The former church and the monastery courtyard are now used as a cultural stage.

The museum is located within the former monastery complex. Several subject areas provide information about the history, formation, extraction and processing of the sandstone; the dinosaur tracks; copper shale mining; the history of the monastery; the settlement and noble family of Cornberg. Open from March to October on Sundays and public holidays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. cornberg.de/kultur_tourismus/sandsteinmuseum/sandsteinmuseum_kloster_cornberg.html
