                        On border smuggling and the transformation of the place
                        "Right here on the Dutch side, since before the Second World War, there has stood a house, popularly known as "Et Männke." That was the name of the shop and restaurant run by brother and sister Harry and Mie. And there they served such delicious and inexpensive coffee, the likes of which we would never have gotten here.

                        The problem: crossing the border at this point used to be prohibited. We were only allowed to enter the Netherlands at the official border crossing and only with a valid passport—after a thorough customs check, of course!

                        But that was also the reason why Harry and Mie's business flourished so much. At the back of the house, there was a hole in the hedge and an inconspicuous back door through which we all regularly went in and out.
