Podhale in Poland has Chochołów (UNESCO), Slovakia has Vlkolínec (UNESCO). It is a unique example of an untouched by the modern architecture, traditional village. This village is more than 600 years old, it is situated in an unbelievably isolated place, high above Revúca River valley. The communication with Ružomberok was through a narrow path - today a cycleway northern from the village. the houses are between 100 and 200 years old, all made of wood with traditional wooden roofs, traditionally painted in white, yellow or blue. 45 houses are protected plus a log two-storey belfry from 1770 on a stone stand and a log well from 1860. There is a Baroque-Classicist Roman-Catholic church from the 19th century. What is the key factor to places like this stay untouched, you might ask? Poverty. The village inhabitants’ main occupations were agriculture, shepherding and forestry, they couldn’t afford anything better than a wooden house, a tiny field behind it. Nowadays Vlkolínec’ main income is from tourism. You can visit one of the houses to see how did the people live here 100 years ago (2,00 €).

The television series "Treasures of the World – Heritage of Humanity" introduces culture-loving viewers to several hundred special places on every continent in short segments. Each of these has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The accompanying website explains the highlight highlighted here: "Between the Low and High Tatras lies the village of Vlkolinec in eastern Slovakia. Situated on a high plateau against the magnificent backdrop of the Sidorovo mountain cone, Vlkolinec has remained isolated from the hustle and bustle of the world for centuries. Until recently, no road, no electricity, no water supply, no revolutions have affected the character of the settlement and awakened the enclave from its medieval cultural slumber. This has allowed the town's unique architecture to be preserved: a living and working environment carved entirely from wood, a cohesive ensemble of around 50 buildings."
