    Old town of Ilanz
The geographical and climatic advantages attracted settlers to the area of Ilanz as early as the Bronze Age, i.e. around 1800 to 800 BC. Ilanz was first mentioned in a document in 765 in the will of the Chur bishop Tello.
Three settlement cores can be distinguished: Upper Ilanz near the church of St. Martin, Lower Ilanz - today's Städtli and St. Nikolaus on the left bank of the Rhine.
The Städtli is now the historical center of Ilanz. Valuable buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries are located here.
The perfect tour of Ilanz begins on the Landsgemeindeplatz and then leads directly into the Städtli. The "Städtli", the old town partially surrounded by walls and originally accessed by four gates, is easily recognizable by the street paving. The Landsgemeindeplatz was outside the city walls. Since the 16th century, the citizens of the nine Reformed neighborhoods of Schnaus, Strada, Ilanz, Castrisch, Valendas, Versam, Riein, Pitasch and Luven, as well as the three Catholic villages of Falera, Ladir, Ruschein and the equally represented Sagogn, have elected the court and the council here.
A religious proportional system regulated the distribution of offices. For example, the Reformed communities appointed the Landammann for four years, after which the Catholic communities took their turn. Over four centuries, the people of Ilanz have gained a lot of experience in dealing with the other denomination. It stands on the site of the old town hall, the Casa Grischa (Gray House), which was demolished in 1881. This used to be the place where the representatives of the Three Leagues met in rotation with Chur and Davos. The current building, last renovated in 1978, served as a schoolhouse until 1970. It now houses the municipal administration of Ilanz/Glion as well as various regional and cantonal offices.

Ilanz has a small, pretty old town and is the first town on the Rhine, on one of the longest rivers in Europe!
