Solitude Castle (from the French solitude, 'solitude', but pronounced [ˈsɔlity:d]) was built between 1763 and 1769 by Johann Friedrich Weyhing and Philippe de La Guêpière as a hunting and representation castle under Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg. It corresponds to the baroque type of Maison de plainsance (pleasure palace). In 1858, "Solitude" became part of the municipality of Gerlingen (Württemberg). Solitude was not incorporated into the city of Stuttgart until April 1, 1942. Since 1956, the area of Solitude has belonged to the Stuttgart district of Stuttgart-West. The castle or the Solitude Hermitage is located on a long ridge between the cities of Leonberg, Gerlingen and the Stuttgart districts of Weilimdorf and Botnang. Built directly on the edge of its northern slope, it offers a view to the north into the Württemberg lowlands towards Ludwigsburg.
