On the east pier, however, there is a typical lighthouse, as you know it from numerous photos. There was a pier light here as early as 1903, but it was replaced 34 years later by the current lighthouse. It is an octagonal, 15-meter-high steel structure with a balcony running around the outside. The lighthouse is green with a white band. The light is 15 meters high. Both - the pier light and the lighthouse - are architectural monuments. The lighthouse can be recognized in the city's coat of arms, and the east pier light was a postage stamp motif during the GDR era.

From 1889 to 1912, a 380-meter-long pier was built to protect the Sassnitz fishing port, but it had no direct land connection for fear of flint deposits in the harbor entrance. Eventually, the land opening was closed and the east pier was extended several times. Today it measures 1,450 meters, making it Europe's longest outer pier.

From the lighthouse's viewing platform you have a breathtaking view and can feel the fresh Baltic Sea wind blowing around your nose.

Beautiful lighthouse at the end of the pier in the port of Sassnitz.
