The steelworks needed since the founding in 1856 a lot of water to cool the plant. That is why it has secured a right to withdraw water from the bag right from the start. But that was not enough. In 1884, the work had a tunnel drive under the Rützenhaus into the Lammersbrink and, a few years later, hit a waterway. The water flows in a direct line to the factory, the surplus water flows into the two Kasinoparkponds, the Waldbad and the Holste pond.

Since the plant management always thought practically, she used the ponds several times: they served as fire-extinguishing ponds, service water reservoir, swimming pool (today Waldbad) and even as carp pond.

The pond below the Rützenhaus was renamed Holste-Teich in memory of the merits of the former factory director Theodor Holste (1881-1890). A memorial stone in the park at the Holste pond reminds of him.
