If you want to see it you have to pay close attention to where it is, unfortunately I cycled past it by accident.

Impressive views of the Douglas DC-6 plane that crashed on July 19, 1986 a few meters from the top of Puig de les Canals in its attempt to put out the forest fire. Adverse weather conditions with wind gusts of more than 100 kilometers and poor visibility due to smoke were the causes of the catastrophe.

The tragic accident of the French Douglas DC-6 plane in Alt Empordà occurred on July 19, 1986. The plane, belonging to the French civil protection, departed from the Marignane base in Marseille around one in the afternoon. However, the control tower lost track of him at approximately a quarter to two. Witnesses confirmed that the plane had crashed in an area near Requesens.

The four crew members of the plane, pilot Jean Pierre Davenat, co-pilot Jacques Ogier, mechanic Roland Denard and assistant Jack Le Bel, died instantly in the accident. It was noted that the combination of smoke and strong winds from the Tramuntana, which exceeded 120 km/h, played a crucial role in the disaster.

On that day, the Empordà region suffered fires in multiple locations, resulting in approximately 16,000 hectares burned. Various emergency forces were mobilized, including firefighters, the Civil Guard, the National Police, the Mossos d'Esquadra, the Red Cross, local police, army forces and numerous volunteers, all working exhaustively to control the fires.

Today, the Empordà landscape has recovered, and the ruins of the DC-6 in the Sierra de l'Albera remain as a somber reminder of the tragedy and a tribute to those who lost their lives trying to put out the fire. The memories of these four young Frenchmen, who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, are still present in the area, especially when the north wind blows through the wreckage of the plane.youtube.com /watch?v=N58ivhTfVU4
