The German section of the Way of St. James ends in Perl at the border triangle if you are coming from Cologne (via Prüm, Echternach and Trier, among others) on your pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. And - despite the Schengen Agreement with freedom of travel and the abolition of border controls, which this monument commemorates - the pilgrim's passport is still an important document on the way :-)

On June 14th, 1985 the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands signed the Schengen Agreement on the gradual abolition of identity checks at internal borders between the contracting parties. Today the Schengen area comprises a total of 26 states: 22 of the 27 EU member states as well as the non-EU members Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland
