The Lance of Lehringen is a 2.38 long yew spear from the Middle Paleolithic discovered in 1948 near Lehringen (Lower Saxony), which means that it can be assigned to Neanderthals. Today, the 115,000 to 120,000-year-old spear, which is not quite correctly called the "lance", is kept in the Historical Museum in Verden.
A replica can be found in the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover.
At the beginning of March 1948, when excavating a marl pit near Lehringen, the skeleton of a large animal was discovered at a depth of about two meters, followed by stone implements and a wooden spear. Most of the finds were removed over the next few days together with the marl and thus destroyed.
The marl pit owner Franz Werner, who was interested in local history, called the retired rector Alexander Rosenbrock, but only on March 18, to carry out the salvage of the only two lorries left.
In the meantime, most of the finds had been removed and some had been taken away by onlookers.
In particular, the documentation of the findings proved to be inadequate from an archaeological point of view. Neither site plans nor photos were made.
The animal was a European forest elephant (Palaeoloxodon antiquus), estimated at the time to be 45 years old.
Fragments of a 2.15 m long "spear" were found between his bones.

In my opinion, the special feature of this highlight is its historical significance. On site, next to a single information sign, there are a few small, inconspicuous areas of water that can only be seen in a few places due to the heavy vegetation on the banks. There is no tour around these water areas.

The found skeleton is exhibited in the museum in Verden.

The forest elephant is an important archaeological find in the Verden district.
