The Episcopal Church (Cathedral) of Carcassonne was dedicated to Archangel Michael (SAINT MICHEL). The name (from the Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - in paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword, occasionally also a lance, as his typical attribute.

square in front of the cathedral where, because it is lower, you can sit in the shade. Built from 1247 and extended in 1283 because church was already too small. Since 1803, the episcopal seat has been transferred from Saint-Nazaire Cathedral in the old town to Saint-Michel, which has been a cathedral ever since.
