The old defensive tower is the city's landmark. As a keep, it was part of the city fortifications.

Ottweiler is a small town with a lovely market in the run-up to Christmas.

The Old Tower, now the bell tower of the Protestant parish church, is an impressive 48 meters high.
The Counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken ruled Ottweiler for almost 500 years. The climax of this era was reached when Count John IV obtained city rights from Emperor Charles V in 1550. The citizens then built a fortification, including the tower in the western wall as a defensive tower. The city fortifications were demolished at the beginning of the 18th century, the tower was rebuilt several times, and was finally converted into the church's bell tower - or so it was assumed.
Architectural studies have shown that the tower must have been built as early as 1410. In 1442, during the same construction period, the spire with its four watchtowers was added. This makes it the oldest surviving wooden structure in Saarland. The tower is more like a medieval keep, probably belonging to the Nassau castle, whose exact location is unknown.
