    Exactly 33 years ago, on October 3rd, 1990, the establishment of German unity was completed with the accession of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) to the Federal Republic of Germany and the German division that had lasted four decades as a result of the Second World War ended. During the so-called Cold War, the border between the western military alliance NATO and the members of the Warsaw Pact led by the Soviet Union (USSR) ran right through Germany. After political reforms in the USSR under Gorbachev, which made headlines in the mid-1980s as glastnost and perestroika, a peaceful revolution began in the GDR population, which ultimately led to the opening of the border on November 9, 1989 and the subsequent overthrow of the SED dictatorship and free elections.
