The former Benedictine Abbey of Neustadt is one of the oldest and most important monastery complexes in Franconia. It was founded in 768/69 in the southeastern Spessart by the second Würzburg bishop Megingoz (died around 783) on the site of the still unlocated place "Rorinlacha".
From here - together with Amorbach Monastery - strong impulses of the Carolingian Saxon mission came. After the decline of the Carolingians, the abbey came under the rule of the Würzburg prince-bishops.
