The Abbey takes its name from the bloody battle of 1061 between the Milanese and Pavia. The church was built shortly after the clash, the adjacent monastery, however, dates back to the 14th century and part of it remains today.

On the site of a bloody battle that took place in 1061 between the people of Pavia and Milan, thanks to the imperial troops of Barbarossa, the toponym of Campomorto is given. According to legend, during the Visconti period, Boschino Mantegazza, commander of Gian Galeazzo's troops, and his son, in command of the Pavia contingent, found themselves fighting on two opposing fronts. Boschino fatally wounded his son and to atone for his guilt he decided to have a church and a convent for pilgrims built in the same place of the tragedy. The first was built shortly after the clash, while the monastery was built by his descendants during the 14th century, where there was already a fortress. The traces currently found on the ground are the remains of a ravelin that protected the entrance to a medieval monastery, which had been (we don't know exactly when, but probably between the 14th and 15th centuries) fortified. Today only two orthogonal buildings remain.
