The basilica of San Giorgio in Lemine was built around the year 1150. Today it is immersed in the green countryside, while in ancient times it was surrounded by a medieval village, destroyed by the Venetian Republic in 1443.

It seems that it was built by the Episcopate of Bergamo in the period in which the basilica of San Maria Maggiore was rebuilt in the city; the same workers would have worked on it, using the same materials and construction techniques.

After the initial phase, the works suffered an interruption and were concluded at the end of the 12th century with a different masonry.

The entire area of the ancient town of Lemine, to which this church belongs as well as San Tomè, was a sacred area to the God Silvano, so this church was also built to cover a pagan territory.

There is no certain date on the birth of the church, as there are no documents or tombstones that commemorate its foundation. The only certain date is 1171 thanks to some writings that described the existence of the building.

It can also be seen, being made up of a band of a different color, that San Giorgio was subsequently modified or restored with poorer materials than those of construction.
