Opatija hat einen geheimen Garten, eine grüne Oase der Ruhe inmitten der Stadt mit einem herrlichen Blick auf die Kvarner Bucht: die Amerikanischen Gärten.

Diese prächtige Parkanlage mit einer Fläche von mehr als 8000 m2 befindet sich in unmittelbarer Nähe des Stadtzentrums und des Strands Slatina und ist dennoch ein Ruhepol mit einer fast mystischen Atmosphäre. Nach Jahrzehnten der Schließung sind die Amerikanischen Gärten nun seit Kurzem wieder der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Durch ein monumentales Tor mit Steinsäulen gelangt man in eine Parkanlage mit gepflegter Vegetation, die zur Entspannung von Körper und Geist einlädt.

The American gardens were built in the 1st half of the 20th century, in honour of Hilda von Hortenau, originally from Opatija, by her husband, the Hungarian Mihaly Pal Kuczor. The gardens owe their name to the continent where Kuczor created his business empire by selling Szegedi paprika. The gardens have terrace like landform, with beautiful view on the Kvaerner bay. Since the gardener's house was built way before all other edifices, there is an obvious and much expressed sense and understanding of landscape architecture and horticulture.
