St. Nikolai Church is the oldest surviving building in the city and was built around 1250 as a late Romanesque fieldstone church.
The apostles are depicted with their instruments of torture on the southern gallery. Christ is shown instead of Judas. The characteristic faces are remarkable. The conclusion here is that these are portraits of Kremmen citizens, e.g. councillors. The age (circa 1693) and rarity of such images make them particularly valuable (restored 2014)
