The Gnadental flood retention basin, also known as the Sailach Reservoir, was built between 1974 and 1976 as a flood control facility. It is owned by the Fichtenberger Rot Water Association, and the planning and construction management were handled by the Schwäbisch Hall Water Management Office. The total cost amounted to €2.92 million, and the reservoir was filled in 1977.

The reservoir lies peacefully and idyllically in the Bibers Valley above Gnadental and has a depth of 1-5 meters.

Because it is a flood retention basin, significant fluctuations in water level can occur after heavy rainfall, which can increase the water surface area to up to 27 hectares when full.
